Dec. 2006: UNEP calls for input on SPAC paper; deadline Jan 11


We have received and been asked to comment on the draft Category I paper, "On Sustainable Consumption and Production," [MS word] prepared for this year's 'Environment for Europe' Belgrade Conference. Please send your comments to Rie Tsutsumi, UNEP Regional Office for Europe, rie.tsutsumi@unep.ch by 11th January 2007 at latest. The revised draft paper will be submitted to the forthcoming Executive Committee and the Working Group of Senior Officials meetings.

Please also be sure to copy the SPAC WG on your input.

Oct. 2006: NGO SPAC statement presented to ECE officials


At the third meeting of the UNECE Working Group of Senior Officials (WGSO) in Geneva, ANPED's partner network ECO Forum presented our NGO statement on sustainable production and consumption, with its proposals for the 2007 Belgrade conference. The November ECO Forum Newsletter reports on the WGSO meeting. The statement, "Making Sustainable Production and Consumption an Overarching Objective for Europe," is now available on the official UNECE website, as well as on our Resources page. It calls for a Pan-European Framework on Sustainable Production and Consumption, linking the regiononal process to the global 10-Year Framework called for at the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

In December, members of ECO Forum's Coordinating Board will discuss follow-up to this and other matters for NGO strategy and preparations for Belgrade.

May 2006: ANPED delivers SPAC statement to CSD 14


As part of its contribution to the 14th Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), several SPAC WG members produced a statement on "Industry and Progress: From Sustained Growth to Sustainable Production and Consumption."

May 2006: SPAC & Energy side event at CSD


For the CSD review on energy, ANPED and the Citizens Network for Sustainable Development organized the side event "The Sustainable Production and Consumption of Energy: Views from Civil Society." The event featured ANPED's Andrey Ozharovskiy (Energy & Nuclear Issues WG) and Jeffrey Barber (SPAC WG and CitNet), as well as Donald Brown (Pennsylvania Consortium for Interdisciplinary Environmental Policy) and members of the Appalachian coal fields delegation.

Dec 2005:ANPED SPAC master proposal


The WG's two-year project proposal for ANPED SPAC work in the northern countries, discussed at ANPED's AGM this year, has now been agreed to by the Program Committee. We now hope to raise the necessary funds to implement this in our member countries. Strategies for moving this forward are now being discussed.

Sept 2005:ANPED AGM to discuss network strategy focusing on SPAC


At the 2005 ANPED AGM, working groups will develop strategies drawing on SPAC as cross-cutting framework to improve ANPED's more issue-specific campaigns and projects. Also, the SPAC Working Group will develop its strategy and plan for 2006

Sept. 2005: ANPED members attend 2nd International expert meeting on SCP


San Jose, Costa Rica . ANPED members Sylvia Lorek (German Forum) and Veena Ramani (Citizens Netowrk and ISF) joined governmental delegates from Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa and Asia to discuss progress on the UN's 10-year framework to promote SPAC initiatives at the 2nd International Expert Meeting on Sustainable Consumption and Production, organized by UNEP & UN DESA in Costa Rica. This meeting represented the culumination of a series of regional consultations on implementing SPAC actions called for during the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Jul. 2005: AVAILABLE: Position papers & country reports on SPAC


Members of the SPAC WG have drafted a variety of policy papers and country reports focused on sustainable production and consumption. These are being subjected to internal discussion. The papers & reports are available on the Resources Page.

Jun. 2005: Informal meeting in Budapest during CEE conference

Some members of the ANPED SPAC working group will be attending a conference organized by the Network of Central and Eastern European NGOs for Sustainable Consumption and Environmental Protection between June 3 - 5 2005. During the conference, the ANPED members present will informally meet to discuss the work plans of the WG, the new SPAC website, the policy papers submitted and future plans.

May 2005: Response from EC


The European Commission's Directorate-General (Environment) has responded to the letter "Implementing Sustainable Production and Consumption in Europe" sent by WG Coordinator Sylvia Lorek on behalf of the ANPED SPAC WG. The letter is available here.

Apr. 2005: Letters to EU


The ANPED SPAC WG has sent letters to the European Commission calling for actions to be taken on the conclusions of the Ostend Stakeholder Meeting on SCP. Responses have been received from the DG of Edcation and Culture and the DG of Employment, Social Affairs & Equal Opportunities. Members who wish to comment on the process should write into the SPAC listserver or to email the WG Coordinator.

Nov. 2006: Sylvia Lorek and Chris Church attended the conference and official launch of the Center for Sustainable Consumption and Production in Wuppertal, Germany, where they also gave a paper on local approaches to SPAC.
